Gas smell, hissing, or a carbon monoxide alarm sounding? Stop reading and get out. Do not turn anything on or off and do not look for the cause. From outside, call 911 and your gas utility. Go back in only when responders say it is safe. Gas smell steps · CO alarm steps
The short answer: Cold air usually means the burners are not lighting or are shutting off while the blower keeps running. Check the filter, open blocked vents and return grilles, and make sure the thermostat is set to heat. If the furnace cycles and blows cold air, or you see soot near the burners, call an HVAC technician the same day.
Safety first. Gas, burners, venting and wiring are jobs for a licensed HVAC professional. This page covers only checks a homeowner can do without opening the furnace or touching gas parts.

Why the air can be cold

ServiceMag describes several patterns:

What you noticePossible cause (ServiceMag)
Burners run a few minutes, shut off, blower keeps goingToo little air crossing the heat exchanger. The high-limit switch tripped. Dirty filter, closed or blocked registers or a blocked return are common.
Burners light, then drop out within seconds and retryFlame sensing failure (such as a coated flame sensor). A technician cleans and tests it.
High-efficiency (90%+) furnace never lightsA blocked condensate drain can back water up into the pressure switch tubing.
Dense new filter, then problems startA dense 1-inch pleated filter can restrict airflow enough to trigger limit trips.

What you can check

What to leave to a pro

ServiceMag lists limit switch testing, flame sensor cleaning and microamp measurement, inducer and pressure switch diagnosis, and reading the board's fault code as pro work. Do not open the burner area.

Match the size printed on the old filter's frame. Check your furnace manual before choosing a high MERV rating.

Common questions

Why is my furnace blowing cold air?

ServiceMag says the burners may not be lighting, may drop out within seconds (flame sensing), or may shut off after a few minutes because airflow is too low, with the blower still running.

Can a dirty filter make a furnace blow cold air?

It can contribute. ServiceMag says a dirty filter is a common cause of the high-limit trip, which shuts the burners while the blower keeps running.

When should I call for service?

ServiceMag says to call the same day if the furnace cycles and blows cold air, or if there is soot or scorching near the burners.
