Gas smell, hissing, or a carbon monoxide alarm sounding? Stop reading and get out. Do not turn anything on or off and do not look for the cause. From outside, call 911 and your gas utility. Go back in only when responders say it is safe. Gas smell steps · CO alarm steps
The short answer: The usual causes are a restricted filter or blocked airflow (the limit switch trips), a dirty flame sensor, a bad thermostat location, or a furnace that is too big. You can change the filter, open registers and clear return grilles. Limit switch and flame sensor work is for a pro. A furnace that keeps overheating needs combustion testing.
Safety first. Gas, burners, venting and wiring are jobs for a licensed HVAC professional. This page covers only checks a homeowner can do without opening the furnace or touching gas parts.

Pro-only, and the safety point

ServiceMag lists limit switch testing, flame sensor cleaning, blower and capacitor work, pressure switch and inducer diagnosis as pro work, and warns never to bypass a limit switch. It also says a cracked heat exchanger can cause short cycling, so a furnace that keeps overheating needs professional combustion testing. Make sure you have a working carbon monoxide alarm. See our CO guide.

Need a new filter?

Match the size printed on the old filter's frame. Check your furnace manual before choosing a high MERV rating.

Common questions

What does short cycling mean?

The furnace starts and stops too quickly. ServiceMag describes two patterns: burners shutting off after a few minutes with the blower still running, and burners dropping out within seconds of lighting.

Can a new filter cause short cycling?

ServiceMag says a dense 1-inch high-MERV pleated filter can restrict airflow enough to trip the limit switch.
