Gas smell, hissing, or a carbon monoxide alarm sounding? Stop reading and get out. Do not turn anything on or off and do not look for the cause. From outside, call 911 and your gas utility. Go back in only when responders say it is safe. Gas smell steps · CO alarm steps
The short answer: Replace the thermostat batteries, check the breaker, and look for obvious problems. If the display stays blank or wiring looks loose, call an HVAC professional. A blank thermostat can also be a sign the system has lost power, so check the furnace too.
Safety first. Gas, burners, venting and wiring are jobs for a licensed HVAC professional. This page covers only checks a homeowner can do without opening the furnace or touching gas parts.

Steps

  1. New batteries. Erie Institute of Technology's guide lists replacing the thermostat batteries as a first step. Use the type printed in the battery compartment.
  2. The breaker. The same guide says to try the circuit breaker. If it trips again, stop and call a licensed professional (our suggestion).
  3. Loose wiring. Erie IT lists checking for loose wiring. We recommend leaving that to a pro unless the manual says otherwise.
  4. Still not working: Erie IT says to contact an HVAC specialist.

If the thermostat works but the house is not warming

Our suggestion: set the mode to heat and the target well above the room temperature to see if the furnace responds. The pages we opened do not cover this step, and we found no sourced battery-life figures, so we give none.

Not sure what is wrong?

Answer a few questions about what the furnace is doing. The checker starts with a safety screen, then points you to the likely causes and next steps.

Common questions

Why is my thermostat blank?

Dead batteries are a first thing to check. Erie Institute of Technology also lists the circuit breaker and loose wiring. If those don't fix it, contact an HVAC specialist.

Can thermostat placement affect heating?

Yes. ServiceMag says a thermostat in direct sun, above a register or on an exterior wall can satisfy too quickly.
